Which loading do I choose?The first step when deciding on which loading you require is to establish what type of manhole cover you want i.e. an iron manhole cover / drain cover or a steel manhole cover / drain cover.

Iron Loadings
Iron manhole covers, drain covers and gully gratings are all manufactured to BS EN124. The loadings are depicted numerically in the above illustration.

1 = A15 l For use in pedestrian areas only (no vehicular access) i.e. footpaths, cycleways etc.

2 = B125 | For use in car parks & pedestrian areas where infrequent vehicular access is likely i.e. car parks, pavements & driveways etc

3 = C250 | For areas not exceeding 500mm from the kerbside & areas with slow moving (20mph) heavy traffic i.e. farms, petrol stations

4 = D400 | For use in all carriageways & main roads where fast moving traffic is present.

Steel Loadings
Our steel manhole covers & drain covers where specified are manufactured to FACTA (Fabricated Access Cover Trade Association) These loadings are depicted in the illustration above.

1 = Class A | For use in pedestrian areas only (no vehicular access inc motorised lawnmowers) i.e. garden footpaths, patio areas etc.

2 = Class AA | For use in areas with vehicular access up to 5 tonnes gross laden vehicle weight (combined vehicle/passenger/cargo) i.e. driveways.

3 = FACTA Class AAA | For areas with vehicular access up to 10 tonnes gross laden vehicle weight (combined vehicle/passenger/cargo) i.e. driveways, pavements etc.

4 = FACTA Class B | For areas with slow moving (20mph) traffic with up to 17/26/44 tonnes gross laden vehicle weight i.e. petrol forecourts, town centres & areas with emergency vehicle access etc

In addition to the above there is further loading for areas with abnormal loads and areas where forklifts operate. These products are specially reinforced to accomodate these loadings and also small footprint areas for forlift trusk etc.
